A complete introduction to traditional kintsugi with urushi lacquer, with demonstrations, guided practice and corrections throughout the course.

Jour 1 — Reconstruction au Mugi Urushi

Préparation du mugi urushi, mélange naturel de farine de blé, ki-urushi et eau, utilisé comme colle traditionnelle pour assembler les fragments de céramique cassée. Les pièces assemblées sont ensuite mises à sécher dans le muro, l'enceinte de séchage.

Jours 2 & 3 · Nettoyage + Comblement

préparation et application du sabi urushi pour combler les fissures, les vides et les parties manquantes de la céramique. Le sabi mélange de terre jinoko ou tonoko, d'eau et de ki-urushi permet de renforcer la pièce et d'amorcer le travail d'harmonisation esthétique.

Jour 3· Ponçage Sabi Urushi

Préparation et application du sabi urushi, mélange de tonoko ou jinoko, eau et ki-urushi, pour combler les fissures, les vides et les parties manquantes de la céramique avant ponçage et finitions.

Jour 4 — Travail de la laque

A delicate layer of black lacquer is applied to the fracture lines, followed by meticulous sanding and smoothing. This step prepares the surface for the final bengara finish.

Day 5 — Finishing

The application of red urushi lacquer (bengara) is followed by an introduction to applying keshifun gold powder. Trainees practice with a gilded brass powder, similar to gold, to master the technique. Further advanced training (Master Class) then allows them to work with real gold.

Master Class Program — 5 days

01

Jour 1 — Analyse des pièces et reconstruction avancée

Study of complex fractures, selection of repair strategies and preparation of materials. In-depth work on delicate assemblies, stress management and consolidation of fragile structures.

Jour 2 — Harmonisation esthétique et travail des surfaces

Correction of volumes, shaping of repaired areas and refinement of fracture lines. Precision work on the aesthetic integration of repairs and surface preparation.

03

Jour 3 — Travail de la laque urushi

Application of the different layers of lacquer, sanding, smoothing and meticulous preparation of the metallic finishes. Further development of techniques for regularity and finesse of movement.

Jour 4 — Finitions et travail à l’or véritable

Application of traditional metallic powders and refinement of finishing techniques with genuine gold. Focus on the quality of the designs, the precision of the lines, and the final aesthetic balance of the repairs.

The art of sublimating fragility

Our formats

Discovery Workshop — 3 hours

An introduction to the history and philosophy of kintsugi, followed by an accessible initiation to the technique, using a small broken cup provided on site.

Group of 8 to 20 people
An introduction to the art of kintsugi: its Japanese origins, the wabi-sabi philosophy, and the idea of breakage as a value rather than a flaw.
Exhibition of pieces created by the craftsman Didier Faillères
Re-gluing the cup using mugi-urushi (wheat glue and traditional lacquer)
Each participant leaves with their repaired mug, as well as an instruction leaflet to continue the repair (finishing touches and gold powder) in the workshop or at home.

Kintsugi Art® Quarterly Course Program

10 sessions of 2 hours each - Thursdays 6pm - 8pm

The quarterly cycle is a progressive introduction to traditional Japanese kintsugi with urushi lacquer, designed to respect the natural drying times of the lacquer between each session.

In 10 weekly 2-hour sessions, you will go through the entire traditional kintsugi process with urushi lacquer — from assembling the fragments to mugi urushi to applying the gold powder — at the natural pace of the lacquer drying, in the workshop, with personalized support throughout the cycle.

No prerequisites. Each participant works on their own ceramic piece.

Séance 1 — Introduction & Philosophie

Présentation de l'art du kintsugi, de la philosophie wabi-sabi et des matériaux traditionnels japonais. Découverte de la laque urushi, des outils et des gestes de sécurité. Préparation des pièces à restaurer.

Séance 2 — Mugi Urushi · Assemblage

Préparation du mugi urushi — mélange de farine de blé, ki-urushi et eau. Application sur les fragments et assemblage de la céramique. Mise au muro pour séchage.

Séance 3 — Nettoyage · Sumiko

Sortie du muro. Nettoyage délicat de la céramique à la poudre de charbon sumiko et chiffon humide. Élimination des résidus de mugi urushi et préparation des surfaces pour le comblement.

Séance 4 — Sabi Urushi · Premier Comblement

Préparation du sabi urushi — mélange de tonoko ou jinoko, eau et ki-urushi. Première application pour combler les fissures et les manques. Mise au muro pour séchage.

Séance 5 — Sabi Urushi · Second Comblement

Checking the drying process. Second application of sabi urushi to areas not fully filled. Shaping the reliefs and adjusting the volumes. Return to the wall.

Séance 6 — Ponçage · Modeler les Cicatrices

Wet sanding of the hardened sabi urushi with waterproof paper and water. Shaping of scars, refining of break lines and smoothing of repaired surfaces. Preparation with black lacquer.

Séance 7 — Laque Noire · Kuro Roiro Urushi

Application de la laque noire kuro roiro urushi sur les lignes de fracture poncées. Couche intermédiaire indispensable qui renforce la réparation et prépare la finition dorée. Mise au muro.

Séance 8 — Ponçage · Laque Noire

Ponçage délicat de la laque noire séchée. Lissage minutieux des surfaces pour obtenir une régularité parfaite avant l'application de la laque rouge bengara. Préparation des outils de dorure.

Session 9 — Bengara Urushi

Application de la laque rouge bengara urushi sur les lignes de fracture. Couche finale qui sert de support à la poudre dorée. Initiation aux gestes de préparation de la dorure. Mise au muro.

10

Finishing Session — Application of Gold Powder

Pose de la poudre dorée keshifun au pinceau sur la laque bengara. Révélation des lignes dorées de la réparation. Présentation des pièces finalisées et bilan du cycle.
