Tokusa Kintsugi – Japanese Natural Abrasive for Polishing

Tokusa – Japanese Horsetail for Kintsugi Polishing

Tokusa, or Japanese horsetail, is a traditional natural polishing material used in kintsugi and Japanese lacquerwork. Its fine, flexible and slightly abrasive surface makes it particularly suitable for delicate smoothing and finishing work.

Used during the finishing stages of Urushi-based restoration, Tokusa helps to gently smooth and polish surfaces while maintaining precise control over the contours and details of the restored piece.

A traditional plant-based alternative to modern abrasive papers, Tokusa is especially valued for delicate finishing work in traditional Japanese kintsugi.

Benefits of Tokusa:

  • Gentle and precise polishing
  • Natural plant-based abrasive
  • Ideal for delicate kintsugi finishing
  • Suitable for Urushi lacquerwork
  • Helps maintain control over fine details and contours
  • Traditional alternative to modern abrasive papers

A simple and authentic Japanese material for achieving smooth, refined finishes while following traditional kintsugi techniques.
