Jinoko Yamashina – Japanese Clay for Kintsugi

Jinoko Yamashina is a traditional Japanese clay powder used in kintsugi and Urushi lacquerwork. It is particularly suitable for preparing Sabi Urushi, a mixture used to fill and level irregularities and prepare repaired areas before the application of subsequent Urushi lacquer layers.

Preparation of Sabi Urushi

Jinoko Yamashina is mixed with water and Ki Urushi to prepare Sabi Urushi. This paste can be applied to cracks, chips and uneven areas during the different stages of a traditional kintsugi restoration.

Main uses:

Filling and levelling: helps correct cracks, chips and surface irregularities
Surface preparation: creates an even base for subsequent Urushi layers
Good adhesion: provides a suitable foundation for successive lacquer applications
Refining repaired areas: helps achieve a smooth, well-prepared surface before the finishing stages
