Roiro-zumi is an extremely fine traditional Japanese polishing charcoal, used to achieve the finish of Roiro-nuri and obtain a deep black lacquered surface, smooth and shiny like a mirror.
Made from dense woods, particularly Japanese oak, Roiro-zumi allows for a truly fine polishing of Urushi lacquer . It is traditionally used with camellia oil to delicately work the surface and achieve a glossy, scratch-free finish.
The Roiro-zumi is used in the final stages of polishing, after the Suruga-zumi , used for flattening, and the Hōh-zumi , intended to refine the surface.
Particularly suited to the demanding work of Kintsugi, Maki-e and Urushi Japanese lacquer , Roiro-zumi allows for a refined finish and a deep shine characteristic of traditional Japanese techniques.
