Roiromigakiko powder – Final polishing of the Urushi lacquer

Roiromigakiko powder is an extremely fine Japanese polishing powder, traditionally used during the finishing and polishing stages of Urushi lacquer .

It is involved in particular in the traditional Roiro process, intended to obtain a particularly smooth and glossy surface on lacquered objects.

Mixed with a small amount of oil, Roiromigakiko powder can be used to prepare a very fine polishing paste for use in the final finishing stages, particularly after Suri Urushi work.

Composition

Roiromigakiko is traditionally obtained from finely prepared and calcined deer antler , then reduced to an extremely fine powder suitable for the delicate polishing of lacquered surfaces.

Preparation of the polishing paste

The powder is used with a small amount of oil to obtain a paste suitable for polishing.

Recommended oil: camellia oil

The amount of oil should be adjusted gradually to maintain a thin paste that allows the surface to be worked delicately.

Use in Kintsugi and Urushi lacquer

Roiromigakiko powder can be used for Kintsugi finishes as well as in various traditional Japanese lacquer techniques.

It is particularly suited to the final stages requiring very fine polishing , in order to refine the surface and slowly reveal the depth and brilliance of the Urushi.
