Keku-shi Japanese Cake Paper – Fuki-Urushi – Pack of 10 sheets

Keku-shi Paper – Japanese Wiping Paper for Fuki Urushi

Keku-shi, also known as Cake Paper or Suriyoo Keku-shi, is a traditional Japanese paper used in Urushi lacquerwork, particularly for the Fuki Urushi technique.

After Urushi lacquer has been applied to the wood, Keku-shi is used to gently wipe away the excess lacquer, leaving only a very thin, even layer on the surface.

Its structure is particularly well suited to this process. Unlike ordinary cloths or papers, Keku-shi leaves very little residue or loose fibres, helping to prevent particles from becoming trapped in the lacquer.

This wiping process provides precise control over the amount of Urushi remaining on the surface. With successive applications of Fuki Urushi, the colour and depth of the wood gradually develop while its natural grain remains beautifully visible.

Depending on the artisan’s technique, Keku-shi can also be used to apply and spread Urushi lacquer over the surface.

Supplied in packs of 10 sheets, Keku-shi is a useful consumable for artisans, restorers and enthusiasts practising Fuki Urushi, Suri Urushi and traditional Japanese lacquer techniques.

Usage tips & Precautions

  • Usage tips

Apply a small amount of Urushi to the previously prepared surface, then spread it carefully.

Next, take a clean piece of Kēku-shi and gradually wipe away the excess lacquer. The goal is to maintain a very thin and even film of Urushi on the wood, rather than a thick layer.

Next, place the piece in the temperature and humidity conditions suitable for the polymerization of Urushi.

After polymerization, the operation can be repeated several times until the desired depth and finish are achieved.

  • Precautions

Natural Urushi contains urushiol and may cause skin reactions before it fully polymerizes.

Wear suitable gloves and avoid any contact of fresh Urushi with the skin. After use, the Urushi-impregnated Kēku-shi should also be handled with care.
