Ki-Urushi is a traditional natural lacquer, used for centuries in the art of kintsugi.
Made entirely from natural materials, without chemical additives, it is environmentally friendly and perfectly suited to Japanese artisanal techniques.

Main uses in kintsugi:

  • Reattach the broken fragments using natural glue

  • Repairing cracks and filling gaps

Traditional preparations based on Ki-Urushi:

  • Mugi-Urushi

  • Nori-Urushi

  • Sabi-Urushi (mixture with Jinoko or Tonoko powder to smooth and strengthen surfaces)

When it dries, Ki-Urushi takes on a shade ranging from brown to black.
Authentic and durable, it remains a central material in the practice of kintsugi and Japanese craftsmanship.

Precautions for use – Urushi lacquers

Urushi lacquers, derived from the sap of the lacquer tree ( Toxicodendron vernicifluum ), are natural and durable but require certain precautions.

Handling and safety

  • Always wear gloves (nitrile or vinyl): fresh urushi can cause allergic reactions (eczema).

  • Do not handle with bare hands.

  • Work in a well-ventilated area, away from food and drinks.

Drying

  • Urushi dries by oxidation under humidity (75–80% / 20–25°C).

  • Drying time: from 12 hours to several days depending on the thickness and conditions.

Cleaning and storage

  • Clean the tools with vegetable oil (camellia, rapeseed…), then with alcohol or soap.

  • Keep the tube tightly closed, away from heat and light.

  • Do not allow the lacquer to dry on the tools.

In case of contact

  • Rinse immediately with vegetable oil, then with soapy water.

  • Consult a healthcare professional if a skin reaction occurs.

Urushi conservation tips

To preserve the quality of urushi , it is essential to follow a few simple rules:

  • Cool, dark place : store away from direct sunlight, in a temperate location.

  • Shelf life : approximately 1 year. After this period, the lacquer may change color or viscosity.

  • Refrigeration : To extend storage over several years, place in the refrigerator in a separate airtight container, away from food.

By following these recommendations, you will ensure optimal quality urushi for your future projects.
