This Hagi sake cup by Ken Sasaki is a Japanese ceramic piece with a subtly nuanced white glaze, selected specifically for restoration using traditional kintsugi with Urushi lacquer.
The cup is broken into 11 pieces, making it a particularly interesting project for practising the different stages of kintsugi. Its numerous fracture lines provide an opportunity to create, after restoration, a unique pattern shaped entirely by the history of the broken piece.
Its slightly irregular form, bevelled rim and natural variations in the glaze give it the distinctive character associated with Hagi ware. In some areas, warm, earthy tones of the clay appear beneath the white glaze, creating subtle contrasts across the surface.
Ideal for experienced practitioners or those wishing to undertake a more complex restoration, this piece offers an opportunity to work on multiple joins and interconnected repair lines using traditional Japanese kintsugi techniques.
