This Japanese chawan by the ceramist Terashima Kyōji (寺島鏡次) , associated with the Seto ceramic tradition, is accompanied by its original tomobako , a wooden box bearing the inscription and seal of the artist.
Broken into several fragments, the bowl was patiently restored using the traditional kintsugi technique , with natural urushi lacquer and genuine 24-carat gold powder .
Gold lines now run across the ceramic, highlighting its deep shades of red, brown, and black. Far from being concealed, the fractures become integral parts of the work and bear witness to its history.
A unique piece , at the crossroads of Japanese ceramics, wabi-sabi aesthetics and the ancestral art of kintsugi .
