Jinoko Wajima earth , or ji no ko , is a traditional powder used as a base coating in the art of kintsugi.
It is made from steam-baked diatomaceous earth ( mudstone ), derived from fossilized diatoms, phytoplanktonic microorganisms.
In Wajima, jinoko is classified into four grades according to particle size:
Ippenji (1)
Nihenji (2)
Sanbenji (3)
Yonhenji (4) – the finest, offered here
The Yonhenji grade is particularly appreciated for obtaining perfectly smooth surfaces during the final filling layers, before the application of lacquers.
An essential material for careful repairs and traditional kintsugi finishes.
