Suruga-zumi is a finely calibrated Japanese charcoal , originating from the Suruga region (present-day Shizuoka prefecture).
Appreciated for its balanced texture , neither too abrasive nor too soft, it is ideal for intermediate polishing stages in lacquer, metal or wood work.
This charcoal helps to refine the surface , correct the micro-irregularities left by the Hō-zumi and prepare the material to receive the glossy finish.
It produces a smooth, satin finish , perfect before the final polishing with Roiro-zumi .
Features and uses :
More abrasive than Hōh-zumi, it prepares the surface before delicate finishing touches.
It helps to eliminate minor irregularities and even out the worked areas.
An essential step before polishing with Hōh-zumi (soft finish) and Roiro-zumi (mirror effect)
Suruga-Zumi thus constitutes an indispensable intermediate step to obtain perfectly prepared surfaces and high-quality finishes in kintsugi and Japanese lacquer.
