Suruga-zumi Charcoal – Polishing of Urushi and Kintsugi

Suruga-zumi is a Japanese polishing charcoal traditionally used to work and refine urushi lacquer surfaces. Originating from the Suruga region in what is now Shizuoka Prefecture, Japan, it is characterized by an abrasion suitable for the intermediate stages of polishing.

Its texture allows for the gradual refinement of the surface and the correction of minor irregularities left by previous polishing steps. Suruga-zumi charcoal thus helps to achieve a smooth, even, and satin-like surface before finer finishing operations.

It is particularly useful in traditional kintsugi work, Japanese lacquer work, and various finishing work requiring precise polishing.

Features and uses:

  • Japanese charcoal intended for intermediate polishing ;
  • helps to reduce micro-irregularities and to even out the surface;
  • suitable for working with urushi lacquer ;
  • prepares the surface for finer polishing and finishing stages;
  • Suitable for kintsugi and Japanese lacquer work.

The Suruga-zumi thus allows one to gradually move from the first stages of abrasion to delicate finishes, while maintaining precise control of the polishing of the urushi.
