NEW DATE MARSEILLE - KINTSUGI INTRODUCTION COURSE OCTOBER 2025
5 DAY INTRODUCTION (excluding weekends) Friday October 3 / Thursday October 9, 2025
PROGRAM & PRICE
-
My kintsugi initiation courses take place over five days and always begin on a Friday.
Why a Friday?
This schedule allows your ceramic pieces to have the time needed for the urushi lacquer to begin hardening naturally over the weekend, in a Muro (drying box). The point is to respect the curing time, where humidity and heat play a key role in the process, fundamental to kintsugi.
During these five days, you will learn the traditional method of drying urushi lacquer, understanding the natural hardening process and the importance of time.
Kintsugi art training is based on progressive learning, allowing you to approach each essential step in the technical and philosophical understanding of this ancestral Japanese art.
You will only have to practice regularly in order to acquire all the know-how and dexterity of kintsugi artisans.

PROGRAM - 5 days (excluding weekends)
-
Using broken ceramics, Didier Faillères* introduces you to the art of Kintsugi with urushi lacquer .
Preparation of the mugi urushi and sabi mixtures , ( D1 ), rough cleaning work, ( D2 ), learning the techniques of applying, sanding and smoothing black lacquer, ( D3 & 4 ), introduction to applying red lacquer and Keshifun gold powder ( D5 ).
DAY 1 - RECONSTRUCTION
The process of metamorphosis
Day 1 – You will learn how to prepare the mugi urushi mixture and apply it to broken porcelain.
You will then discover a specific technique for assembling the broken pieces, before placing them in the muro (drying box with controlled temperature and humidity).
Finally, we will see how the humidity and heat of the muro influence the hardening of the ki urushi lacquer.
DAY 2 - FILLING, POLISHING AND SHAPING
Fill missing pieces and cracks
D2 - A very important step, because this is where the definition of the aesthetic and visual aspect of your broken ceramic begins. The delicate art of urushi kintsugi consists of filling the gaps with a mixture called Sabi ( Jinoko earth and urushi lacquer ). All while respecting the harmony of the piece.
DAY 3/4 LACQUER WORK
Applying, sanding and smoothing the black lacquer
D3 - D4 - Start of applying black lacquer in a thin layer on the joints and breaks.
This technique will allow you to obtain perfectly smooth deposits for optimal application of the red bengara lacquer .
DAY 5 KESHIFUN
Application of red lacquer and Keshifun powder
D5 - Learning the technique of applying red lacquer and gold powder with specific tools.
During my workshops, students use gold brass powder, which has a color similar to gold. They often feel the desire to use gold powder directly, however it is preferable to practice beforehand during the first attempts with a less expensive material. Once this technique is mastered, gold or silver powder can be introduced later, for example during a Master Class .
